The Safety Department provides personal protective equipment to employees and students, blood borne pathogens cleanup kits, hepatitis vaccinations for employees, recycling containers, surfacing materials for playgrounds, employee safety incentive program, and staff development for employees regarding employee and student safety.
CMCSS employees are trained annually regarding occupational safety issues. Also, employee safety training sessions are scheduled for all new employees of CMCSS. Ongoing safety training also occurs throughout the district for employees, to maintain a “safety-conscious environment” as needs arise.

ConnectEd Communication- A phone notification service offered to parents through financial support from TN Safe School Act Funding. With Connect-Ed, CMCSS can improve student safety, parental involvement, staff communications, and student attendance.
Property/Fleet/Commercial General Liability Insurance- The CMCSS maintains and manages insurance coverage for property and casualty insurance on our more than 600 million dollars worth of facilities and property, bus and maintenance fleet of 400 vehicles, and commercial general liability.
Indoor Air Quality- CMCSS strives to provide the highest quality environment for our students to learn. We conduct regular analysis of air quality in schools, complete a rigorous maintenance schedule on our HVAC Equipment, and also maintain good housekeeping practices within each of our school facilities.
Crisis Planning and Emergency Management- All CMCSS personnel are trained to work together to handle emergency situations. CMCSS has implemented and provide ongoing training for Individual School Crisis Plans, tornado, and fire emergency plans for every school in our district. We provide a Classroom Emergency Response Guide to each teacher, and have developed a System-wide Disaster Recovery Plan.
Playground Safety- The safety of our children while on playgrounds is of utmost importance to CMCSS. Our playgrounds have annual inspections before reopening for each school year. The playgrounds are then monitored monthly for any hazards, and are also inspected regularly our Maintenance Department.
Modified Duty Program- This program was developed as a benefit from our On-the-Job Injury Program and allows the employee to return to work, although the capacity may differ from the usual routine or work setting.
Accident Review Team – When CMCSS-owned vehicles are involved in an incident, an established review committee reviews the circumstances surrounding each incident. The findings of the committee are used as training tools and for measurement purposes.
CMCSS adheres to Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health (TOSHA) regulations and are monitored for compliance regularly.
Asbestos Management and EPA Compliance- All CMCSS-owned buildings meet Federal and State guidelines and maintain and submit annually the CMCSS Asbestos Management Report. The CMCSS program is monitored regularly for compliance.
Recycling Program- To help our environment and to prevent waste, all of our schools participate in a recycling program which is administered thru Bi-County Solid Waste Management.
Safe School Act Grant – Funds allocated from the state each year to enhance the security of our school facilities and school buses.
Safe and Drug Free Schools Grant- Funds allocated from the Federal Government each year to support drug prevention and character education activities in schools.
Hazard Communication/ Chemical Hygiene Program- For the safety of students and staff CMCSS maintains Material Safety Data Sheets for all chemicals used within our school facilities. These MSDS's are maintained at a designated Hazard Communication post within each school facility.
Drug and Alcohol Testing Program- CMCSS Employees are subject to random, post accident, and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing.
